Check out their little shop in Hermosillo - pricey (even in pesos), but worth the splurge. ]]> Tue, 03 Sep 2013 05:28:36 +0000 <![CDATA[Don Chendo Destilado de Agave Anejo: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=2788 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=2788 This is seriously the best tequila I have ever tasted. It is nothing like anything you can get state-side. It's made with pure blue agave, but because they make it in small batches and do not distribute internationally, they are not allowed to call it tequila, so they resort to "Liquor de Agave." It is hand-made in small batches at a small private distillery in Jalisco outside Puerto Vallarta. They offer five types: white, Reposado, Anejo, and two sweetened spirits, almondo and a coffee tequilla that also includes chocolate and vanilla flavors (unlike the much sweeter Kaluha). A couple of sites online say that this is made with green agave, but I asked one of Don Chendo's sons at the distillery, and he confirmed that that is incorrect. False information is often posted online by competing distilleries, in order to discredit other distilleries. With anticipated approval, they are hopeful that they will be able to ship bottles to the U.S. in 2013. There's more info. at tequilatourvallarta.com. Again, this is extremely fine tequila, in my opinion, second to none, and certainly much better than even the finest offerings by the likes of Jose Cuervo. ]]> Mon, 07 Jan 2013 01:57:54 +0000 <![CDATA[Cielo Rojo Bacanora Blanco: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=2681 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=2681 My first experience with Bacanora and it was an interesting trip. Aroma: Grassy/sweet agave with a hint of smoke and citrus Initial Taste: Sweet with a little citrus and grassy notes. Body: Medium-thin body. Smoke comes more forward and grassy/earthy notes become more prominent than the initial sweetness. Finish: Medium-long that tastes like a grass fire. The smoke dominates the vegetal notes and there is a lingering touch of citrusy sweetness. A little bit of tequila and a little bit of mezcal. The flavors took me a bit by surprise at each point as well. Definitely a spirit I'd be interested in exploring more. ]]> Wed, 03 Oct 2012 01:48:06 +0000 <![CDATA[Tres Agave Margarita Mix: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/margarita-mix/discussions/review.html?id=2120 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/margarita-mix/discussions/review.html?id=2120 Love, love, love it. I love Margaritas, but usually only let myself have them about once a week, thanks to the calories. But at 68 calories a serving (for the mix only) and all natural, now I can have them whenever I want. And they taste as good as the ones I have at my favorite Mexican restaurant. This stuff is the bomb! Because it's made with agave nectar there's no aftertaste like the "Skinny" cocktails. ]]> Mon, 07 Nov 2011 13:39:44 +0000 <![CDATA[Cielo Rojo Bacanora Blanco: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1942 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1942 I have sampled many locally produced Bacanoras since I moved to Banámichi and this brand is off-the-charts awesome. I have visited the distillery and I sell this by the shot and by the bottle at my hotel, restaurant and cantina. It is always a hot product with my clients and friends. The double distillation process removes any harshness and impurities that can cause a hangover. This is the best value on the market and I would say that you will not regret any extra effort that you have to put out to acquire a bottle or two. When I sell a shot, the guests take home a bottle. When they return, they buy as much as the law will allow. It is actually a big draw for the region and our hotel can arrange tours to the Rancho Tepúa. ]]> Mon, 09 May 2011 14:19:04 +0000 <![CDATA[Tres Agaves Agave Nectar: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/agave-nectar/discussions/review.html?id=1809 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/agave-nectar/discussions/review.html?id=1809 It's not the cheapest "margarita mix" on the shelf but it's by far the best. It's not really a "margarita mix" at all because you still use fresh lime juice to make a perfect margarita. I've tried many mixes, but I'm spoiled by simply the agave nectar and lime juice. It's sweet, but not too sweet. I still want to taste the tequila. I don't want a mix or sweetener that drowns out the tequila. The agave nectar by Tres Agaves allows the tequila to breathe. You can find a lot of cheaper margarita mixes, but you get what you pay for. ]]> Mon, 07 Feb 2011 00:13:48 +0000 <![CDATA[El Jimador New Mix Paloma: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/ready-to-drink/discussions/review.html?id=1607 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/ready-to-drink/discussions/review.html?id=1607 New Mix paloma is a wonderfully refreshing drink, especially in hot weather. It's not a malt-based beverage like all of the other American ready-to-drink choices. This is actually grapefruit soda with a good mid-level silver tequila from casa herradura. I used to buy this stuff all the time in Mexico, it tastes great! And this is the exact same recipe that they market south of the border - it essentially tastes like grapefruit soda with a hint of tequila. I think the mix is outstanding for premade. It's hard to make a fresh paloma that's more than a tiny bit better than this. Considering that, I think this rtd beverage is a great one to keep around if you like citrus drinks. I rated it 60/100 on price because I think 6.99 is slightly high for only 4 cans. I've seen this product selling from $6.49 up to $7.99 per four-pack, with the majority of retailers marking it at $6.99. A little high on cost, but remember you're buying a real mixed drink in a can, not some watered down malt-based drink or wine cooler. There's a noticeable difference in quality, with New Mix paloma coming out far ahead of the other rtds on the market. ]]> Sun, 11 Jul 2010 03:07:33 +0000 <![CDATA[Don Chendo Destilado de Agave Anejo: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1564 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1564 This is some of he smoothest tequila I've ever tasted. We stopped by the distillery and took the tour, which involved a lesson on how to judge tequila, and a taste of about five different kinds. It is well worth the trip. I only wish I could get it stateside. ]]> Mon, 14 Jun 2010 20:04:54 +0000 <![CDATA[Don Beto Bacanora Silver: ]]> https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1443 https://tequila.net/other-reviews/spirits/discussions/review.html?id=1443 I asked a friend from Sonora to bring me a good bottle from his recent trip home. This is my first Bacanora experience so I have nothing else to compare it to, but after sampling it several times it presents in the Riedel glass as follows: Clear with a silvery cast it offers an unfamiliar rubbery latex aroma with strong smoke, pine resin and earth. It tastes like a very young spirit. Initially sharp on the tongue, it is quite bitter with an significant alcohol bite. The flavours in the body soften somewhat, and the bitterness abates but the smoke and earth continue to dominate. Finish is lengthy - strange green agave, bitter licorice and more smoke. This is a product which will require some exposure to truly appreciate. ]]> Tue, 30 Mar 2010 00:31:13 +0000
