The street tacos, for which it is famous, are to die for. The chorizo y huevo, carnitas, and al pastor are just amazing. The ambiance is big (obviously) on sugar skulls but manages to feel natural and not touristy. Almost every tequila you could think of. The reviews I read where mixed, but decided to take the plunge and go with an open mind. It only takes one thing to turn dining out into a negative experience. The place was busy and the only tables available where not really conducive to a meal more like a lounge area to drink and chat, so we opted for seats at the bar and for me I think it was the best choice as I am a Tequila Nerd and I think these guys may just have the title for biggest Tequila selection in a Bar/Restaurant in Canada(but don't quote me on that one)I am guessing about 150 brands/ages.(they had the blanco/Repo/Anejo of allot of brands of 100% agave) I was also impressed by their Margarita even though I did not taste is. They told me they made their house Margarita with Lime/Lemon juice, agave nectar, Cazadores blanco, and triple sec. Just like I make at home minus the Triple sec and I usually use a slightly better tequila but at least they are using a 100% agave tequila in their margs and that’s a hard thing to find in Canada. To eat I had the Tortilla soup which was hot and tastie, and I ordered a Taco Trio of Beef short ribs, Adobe pork and Crispy Red snapper. I liked the snapper the best. Not bad at all but they used flour shells, corn would have been a nice option and chopped cilantro on them would have been better than the raw sprig on top so the flavor was in every bite. Came with three salsas one of which was a Pico de gallo(bonus). One of my dinner companions also had table side mixed Guacamole, another nice addition. It was good and fresh but a little bland IMHO. Some more spices and extra lime juice would have tuned it to my taste buds, and maybe caramelized onion. The bar tenders had a decent knowledgeable on Tequila and had a keen interest in the spirit. Franz was great to talk to and graciously made recommendations on his favourites. We had a good time, the staff at the bar where attentive and engaging; the food was fresh and tastie and they have the biggest selection of Tequila in a Bar I have seen in Canada, and they make a pure margarita. The Tequila prices are reasonable for 100% agave in Canada. If I find myself In Calgary again Anejo will be on my dining list again. Next time I think I will try the Molcajete, that looked interesting. ]]> Mon, 05 Nov 2012 00:06:52 +0000 <![CDATA[Oyamel Cocina Mexicana: ]]> https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2706 https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2706 Just a couple of blocks from the National Mall, this fantastic restaurant is a hang-out for local government workers. It is always crowded early but less so later and on weekends when many patrons are at home in the suburbs. Linda and I go to D.C. once or twice a year to visit the wide array of good restaurants available there. This is one place we never miss even though we know it is going to be busy and crowded. It's also only two blocks from the Verizon Center so if there is an event, it can be even more hectic. The food is incredible with extreme attention to detail; specialties from Michoacan, Puebla, Oaxaca and Mexico City. The decor is diverse from Day of the Dead to Oaxacan alebrijes. The tequila selection is a bit thin for someone from west of the Mississippi, but not at all bad for this part of the country. Here - I had perhaps one of my favorite flights of tequila; Chinaco anejo, Chinaco Negro extra anejo and Chinaco Emperator anejo. This was my only time to taste the Emperator. The tequila manager came over and said no one had ever asked for a flight like this at the restaurant before. Basically, she gave me the Emperator free; that made it even sweeter. All tequila was poured from the bottles at the table which was not close to the bar; very professional and extremely attentive. And - after your experience here, you can walk down to the National Mall and see the Capitol, the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument and, of course, the White House. ]]> Tue, 16 Oct 2012 07:16:51 +0000 <![CDATA[Mi Dia From Scratch: ]]> https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2686 https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2686 Visited this restaurant after seeing it here on tequila.net. We were looking for a change from our regular tequila bar and this one was close enough so we decided to give it a shot. WOW. That was our first impression as we walked in the door and the wows continued throughout the evening. The decor of the place was modern and inviting. We chose to sit at the bar and were at once greeted by Rob and George they offered us the drink menu (2nd wow) and offered suggestions. Once we settled in, Mike, one of the managers stopped by and welcomed us and made feel important. I mention this because at our regular tequila bar, which we have frequented quite regularly for close to 2 years we have never been welcomed like this. The owner is even there many of the times we are there and he has yet to come over and introduce himself. We placed our food order; I chose the DUCK CARNITAS tacos and my wife chose the BANANA LEAF WRAPPED SCOTTISH SALMON. (3rd wow) The food was prepared well and the presentation was 5 star worthy. Flavors were amazing (duck I thought may have been a bit dry but still flavorful)After dinner we were feeling a bit adventurous, perhaps because of the margaritas we were enjoying. They have on tap chilled pineapple, chipotle infused Partida silver tequila. They serve this in one of their drinks Dolce Infuego but they also serve it straight up in a miniature champagne glass for sipping. (4th wow) This well could have been the highlight of our visit. A slightly smokey background aroma along with the smell of sweet pineapple. The flavor profile was absolutely amazing. You would never know you were drinking tequila. You'll just have to try it yourself when you visit there. All in all our evening was one we will not soon forget. It is a bit on the $$$ side, however, if you are looking for a new experience filled with great atmosphere, incredible tasting food and margaritas made fresh with out a mix, you will not mind dropping a bit of coin. We have been back a few more times and have had similar experiences. ]]> Wed, 03 Oct 2012 20:06:40 +0000 <![CDATA[La Tequila Cocina Mexicana: ]]> https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/mexico/discussions/review.html?id=2591 https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/mexico/discussions/review.html?id=2591 I have been to a lot of tequila bars and restaurants in my life but La Tequila was the best. For one thing, it is in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and that says it all when it comes to tequila. In 2008 on my first trip, Linda and I stopped at the restaurant but it was closed - a Monday, I believe. On the most recent trip, June, 2012 we made reservations for a Wednesday night. When you enter the restaurant there is a glass wall of tequila to greet you. After settling in at our table (4 people) I realized this restaurant belonged in Manhattan. Our waiter was Marlon - he was born in Houston and his mother named him after Marlon Brando. Absolutely the best waiter I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He walked my friend, Philip, and I through the tequila menu. We sampled several brands in flights. Then my eye caught something I had been looking for since last summer - Sotol; and not just Sotol but Bacanora and Raicilla as well. I concocted a flight of these three amazing spirits. They are fantastically different from tequila. The food was amazing and after dinner, Marlon invited our group to the club upstairs. It was New York all the way with music videos in Spanish and English - and a bar with about 300 tequilas. An outdoor patio seemed popular with the locals (who were much better dressed than us) but we did not want to linger too far from the amazing bar. Finally, before we left - Marlon gave us each a menu which is in the form of agave leafs spread out from a single point. The restaurant is not cheap for Mexico but why should it be - it feels like you are in New York. Go if you can. ]]> Fri, 20 Jul 2012 08:15:46 +0000 <![CDATA[Luna Modern Mexican Kitchen: ]]> https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2432 https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=2432 I think I like this place. My wife and I have visited here more than 10 times eating at the bar and in the dining room and have never been disappointed by the food or service. The food prices range from $10 to $30, a good value for any Mexican Restaurant. The Tequila selection is amazing. I would guess 50 to 100 different selections. the owners are well versed in Agave Spirits and they share their knowledge with the staff. On several occasions one of the staff or owners will make a recommendation on a Tequila I haven't tried and they hit a home run every time. When I was admiring the selection, they immediately tried to up sell me with the Herradura Selection Suprema. The smaller selection, I could live with (after all, there's no way that I could sample even 30 brands), but with that smaller selection came a higher price, and no specials like Maria's Flight of 3 Tequilas for $14. My biggest disappointment was when I ordered a Corralejo Reposado, and the server didn't know what it was, whereas at Maria's, even though there was a 30 minute wait for a table, the server not only took the time to explain the differences between Blancos and Reposados and Anejos, he also provided his favorite choices at my request. Because Juan Jaime's is in my neighborhood, I took a friend, and expected our visit to be an occasion. Their tequila list is pretty decent although you're not going to find anything out of the ordinary. The food is pretty good too. For a downtown bar, it's one of my favorite joints. Most visitors here don't come for the tequila, so be prepared for the "vodka Redbull" and "Bud Lite" crowd if you go on the weekend. Other than that, it's a fun place. They usually have some luchador movies playing on the TVs which adds to the ambiance. Another note: don't expect to get great advice from the bartenders. After having various conversations with the guys behind the bar, I've usually found them to be a) wrong, b) confused, or c) not very big fans of tequila. My advice is just to grab the menu and start picking out a juice you've never had before. If you go on a Monday, I'll come say hi. You'll probably be the only other one there drinking straight tequila out of a snifter. ]]> Tue, 16 Aug 2011 19:10:37 +0000 <![CDATA[The Lime - Tequila Bar: ]]> https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=1984 https://tequila.net/tequila-bars-restaurants/united-states/discussions/review.html?id=1984 If you know what you like this is an awesome tequila bar, I am very picky about what bartends put in my margaritas, my first visit I told my server exactlly how I wanted my margarita and I think she was surprised because she come back and told me it was going to be a $24 drink and I said great!
