Very dark rich looking extra anejo, initially the nose has a tonne of caramel, however once the initial whiff is taken in there is a finishing aroma of smoke/ashpalt, though not unpleasant it kinda hits you differently. As you expect the intial taste has the same caramel and smokey palate, with a little hazelnut as well. This award winning tequila is probably the darkest and most flavorful anejo I have tried. The appearance is a rich warm golden root beer brown color. The aroma is heavy sweet bourbon whisky, ripe fruit, raisin, and plum. First taste is tobacco, caramel, vanilla, spice, earth, and woody ash. I also picked up hints of rye and cloves. Unmistakable are the sherry and bourbon influences from the aging process revealing a sharpness that is on the bitter side. It has a subtle sweetness and a complex mouth numbing woody aftertaste of medium duration with agave fading warmly. There's a lot going on with this busy tequila yet it manages to maintain a nice agave foundation, even if at times I had to look for it. My bottle came with the simple version of the 'barrel' wood and glass case with the sliding door and etched commemorative Riedel glass. The bottle itself is interesting with foil labels and glass cork stopper. The tequila is dark golden brown. The nose is heavy on vanilla and caramel. The suprise is the taste. After the nose, I was ready for a heavy sweet tequila. I found vanilla, fruit, and caramel in the flavor profile. I detected a moderate presence of agave and a very mild earthiness. The tequila is a golden brown color and has an intense vanilla and caramel aromas. Once you get past the intensity of the nose, you can smell moderate notes of fruit. On the tip of the tongue the tequila is mellow and soft but yet has a moderate agave taste. While the tequila has a low-to-no bitterness, it is actually fairly sweet and syrupy. The flavor has moderate agave, vanilla, and smokey attributes which are followed by mild spice and earth. Lastly, there are mild flavors of fruit, floral and caramel accents. The tequilas finish is a short-to-moderate duration of flavor followed by a hot and tingling alcohol feeling.
