I got into it because it's what the old timers drank in rural Jalisco. El Jimador has gone downhill since the turn of the century, and I liked the old presentation better. That said, it tastes fine and it's still a respectable choice for mixed drinks.

The quantity is the main selling point here, but it is important to remember this is hardly tequila. The fact that it is not 100% agave cannot be overlooked and it shows in the final product.

Aroma: Sweet but alcohol laden non the less
Body: As others have said, fairly sticky
Finish: This is a long, hot and sour finish. This might be great if it was chicken.

The main problem here is that there is little to no agave taste, which is what distinguishes tequila, mezcal and sotol from fire waters derived from sugar. For a cheap tequila go with corralejo reposado, El Jiminador or Horonitos.

NOM 1102. It sure smelled of it. I bought 3 750 ml bottles for $19 total in Cozumel last week. Are they giving this away ? Not as smooth as higher priced brands, but I can sip this reposado. A little peppery at the end. Certainly better than most low end tequilas. I don't think I have seen this in my local store.
I had a sample and was really surprised. I thought it might be a switcheroo. Nope, the bottle I opened was what I had tasted. Just over $6 for a sipping tequila.
Try it out.

Bought at Trader Joe's for $20. It sounds like they may have re-formulated this brand because others reviewing it refer to it as a mixto. My bottle and label are different from the picture above and clearly labeled 100% Blue Agave.

The aroma is very much vanilla-like in my estimation. I don't put much stock in my nose anymore, but the taste confirms the vanilla flavor. It doesn't taste real alcoholy--not too much burn, but my nose does pick up a good amount of the alcohol. Used as a sipper, it's pleasant and grows warm and fuzzy inside, but not the best tasting I've had. For this price point you can't expect a top notch anejo. For sipping I'd look for something a little more sophisticated, more taste, and little smoother, but for margaritas it's more than fine. The bottle is well presented, but I'm more partial to corks than screw tops like this one. There's just something more authentic to a cork, even if it doesn't make the juice taste any different. For $20, which is my specialty, I'd buy it again but for special occasions, let loose with a little more cash. Salud.

Those days are over. It's been a 100% agave spirit for a few year and still has the great low price.

Aroma: Fairly basic. Slightly earthy agave and light oak & spice.
Initial Taste: Cooked agave and a hint of vanilla. Basic and pleasant.
Body: Medium-thin body. Slightly fruity agave, vanilla, oak and light spice.
Finish: Medium length finish with a little kick and slight burn. A solid overall finish with agave/spice, oak and vanilla.

This is a solid overall reposado. When thinking of tequilas in the same class, I would compare this favorably to JC Tradicional. The flavors aren't ultra-complex, but it's a pleasant sipper and would make a solid value mixer as well. If you're looking for something simple at a good price, El Jimador is a very good option.

I come to sampling this strictly out of curiosity of what the world's best selling mixto tastes like.

Aroma: Sugar, citrus and strong alcohol nose.
Initial Taste: A really sweet medicinal taste. It's like cough syrup and simple syrup had a child.
Body: Sticky. Not at all crisp like a 100% agave spirit. It coat the mouth, but again feels like an agave/Robitussin mixto.
Finish: A sour and bitter aftertaste. No agave presence at all.

The Cuervo brand makes some good tequilas. This is not one of them. This is probably the most "candied" of all of the mixtos that I've tasted. I get why people try it...I have no idea why anyone would continue. It's too bad that people too often consider this the definition of tequila. It's pretty terrible.

Aroma: Light agave, some spice and oak.
Initial Taste: Not a ton of initial flavor. Light agave and vanilla flavor.
Body: REALLY thin body. Almost like drinking water. Nothing complex here.
Finish: A very strange finish for this tequila. The taste is like a thick custard, but the texture is really thin. It confuses your brain.

It's a $15 100% agave tequila. I wasn't expecting miracles. It's better than Cuervo Gold and not as good as Camarena and other low prices 100% agave tequilas. It's fine in a pinch because it's well priced.

Aroma: A decent amount of agave on this nose along with a chemical/alcohol smell.
Initial Taste: Sweet and syrupy.
Body: Tasted like a mixto. Some agave, wood...and something else.
Finish: The trademark Sauza "burn." None of their tequilas don't finish with an alcohol numbing. This one is no different.

If you're looking for something readily available for under $20, you can do worse. However, you're better off planning ahead and buying and holding something better so that you're not forced to choose among the 5-6 bad tequilas that a local store might have.

Aroma: Honestly, it wasn't good. It was almost medicinal. Notes of vanilla and agave and alcohol.
Initial Taste: Sweeter than the nose would indicate, but nothing noteworthy.
Body: Thick and almost like cough syrup. The flavor was decent, but not good enough to make me want to drink a lot more.
Finish: An unexpected minty element to the finish, which leads me to believe that's what led to the odd aroma.

Great bottle, mediocre tequila. In the price range, you can flat out do much better.

The smell is from oak and spicy, it smells similar to a very old rum or a cognac, in the mouth, this tequila gives you what it promise, an intense flavour, complex tasting where participates the caramel, agave, smoke, oak and a little bit of vanilla. The final is good but not very long, this tequila tastes and have a personality as his name suggest "a great old". I tried to mix it with cola and i needed a little bit to make a strong and spicy tasting "charro negro".

If you try it straight a little agaveflavour can be tasted but alcohol is dominant.

Is one of the strongest alcohol taste blancos i've tried (but not the strongest), Cabrito is a little bit softer but similar to me ( a little better and at same price), arette blanco is better (almost same price) and Don Julio 70 blanco (this one is expensive in Mexico to be a blanco so i think that in USA will be even more expensive) is much better so don't drink this one (sauza) if you ain't gonna mix it.

I'll try to evaluate this one objectively with criteria for beeing a blanco and with charity (i prefer añejos).

Este es para mezclarse, ni intentes tomarlo solo en un caballito.

If you want to buy this one make a cocktail with it (charro negro so the coca cola have strong flavour). This tequila is strong as many blancos and the taste of agave can be sensed at the final but there are better reposados out there.

Im not very cruel with this one because im trying to evaluate it objetively to be a reposado and because i drank this one in my first parties.

If you buy it better be determined to be drunk, all people have vulnerability moments and bad experiences, broken hearts, so this one can help, when you're drunk you can't feel the taste in your mouth any more (and if you're very macho try a Jarana, huff... you'll pray for a Cuervo).

No pongo reseña en español por que la mayoría de los mexicanos ya hemos probado este tequila.

Smells very good and deep (woody to me), the taste is smooth and well balanced so give you the chance to feel it rolling in your mouth for a few seconds. Large and woody/carameled final obteined after 6 years aging (not common aging in tequilas).

Highly Recommended.

Altamente recomendado.

That's just not happening with this tequila. Very pleasently surprised at the smell, crisp without an overpowering alcohol presence. This anejo lacks the full body flavor of better anejo's and does have an alcohol burn to it. This stuff does however make for great mixed margaritas. A couple ounces of this with some lime juice and tripe sec and you have a very good drink. Definitely better than the low end tequilas, it is shy of being premium in my opinion.

Initial taste: Sweet, but a bit of a let-down from the nose.
Body: The agave is more apparent in the body than it is in the nose, which is interesting. Caramel, vanilla, spice still linger against a very slight wood background.
Finish: Long, complex, and very enjoyable. Surprisingly agave-forward that leaves a lasting impressions of vanilla, spice, earth, smoke, oak, and a little dark fruit.

I thought this was good, though the nose is so good that it's a bit deceptive. I think this tequila should be better than it was. I'll try another bottle from a different batch. Otherwise, this is a solid A.

Love the packaging too.
