About the Beverage Tasting Institute's International Review of Spirits
The Beverage Tasting Institute's International Review of Spirits is an annual competition which judges the best of the best in the world of spirits, tasting over 300 spirits and awarding honors to those of exceptional quality. All spirit samples are tasted by category blind, neat, and at room temperature (68°) in Riedel stemware. No more than fifteen products are tasted in a two-to-three hour daily tasting session in a specially designated tasting room. The spirits are then judged on a qualitative scale by a distinguished panel of judges. The Beverage Tasting Institute uses a system based on the bands in the 100-point scale, which is widely recognized and roughly correspond to a five star style system. These bands are: 96-100 Superlative, 90-95 Exceptional, 85-89 Highly Recommended, 80-84 Recommended, less than 80 Not Recommended. 1800® Tequilas were all given at least a rating of Highly Recommended.
