Tequila Barrique de Ponciano Porfidio Añejo

This limited edition 100% Blue Agave spirit represents the pinnacle of the distiller's art. Hand crafted in honor of Ponciano Porfidio, Barrique is hand bottled in specially commissioned artisan glass vessels to signal its unique heritage. Aged a minimum of one year until peak maturity in select small 100 liter, unusual and expensive wood varieties. Barrique derives its name from this innovative proprietary aging process pioneered by Ponciano Porfidio.

Produced between 1998 and 2001, labeled as both 100% Blue Agave Spirits (Agave Eau de Vie) and Tequila in 2001, Porfidio Barrique was extremely limited with only 3,000 bottles produced.

Porfidio Barrique took distillation one step further by re-distilling the product obtained in the previous triple distillation process, submitting the product to yet another head & tails separation. This resulted in a product of ultra purity. Aging went one step further by bypassing virgin oak barrels, and aging the product in unusual and very expensive wood varieties such as Cherry wood, Acacia, and Esche, which was unheard of in the industry (notice color difference in photos). Porfidio Barrique is more adequately categorized as 'Fine Agave Eau-de-Vie'.

Porfidio Barrique came with a ceramic blue canister as shown in the main photo.

Porfidio Barrique Anejo No NOM Tasted on 9/18/07 at 6:00pm. I purchased this tequila at Sundance in Sacramento, CA for $65 and tasted it out of a 4 ounce glass. The tequila is a amber brown color. This Anejo’s aromas consist of intense caramel and fruit aspects followed by moderate floral, spice, and smoke. On the lighter side, this Anejo has mild aromas of vanilla and earth. On the tongue, this tequila is mellow and has a heavy mouth feel. While the tequila has heavy agave flavor, it is sweet and syrupy with no bitterness. The flavor of this tequila contains intense notes of agave and caramel followed by moderate fruit, floral, wood, and vanilla aspects. Upon finishing this tequila, there is a very long duration of flavor and numbing alcohol intensity. I have rated this tequila at 96 out of 100 points.
