The majestic Don Julio 1942 - to many the undisputed King of Tequilas. A very beautiful nose: agave, caramel, vanilla, a bit of toffee, some fruit, a kiss of brandy from the wood. And the nose just gets bigger and better as it rests in the glass. Pretty thin mouthfeel but taste is rich agave, caramel, vanilla, a nice nutty bitterness, some more soft brandy smoothness - it's pretty fabulous. Spicy-smooth going down, with a nice lasting finish; vanilla and light spice continue in the aftertaste. This anejo is no slouch in the complexity department. It might be the best tequila you're going to get without stepping too much out of the box. But the question is this: Do I like it enough to spend another 100-plus dollars when this bottle is finished? Hmmm...

This has always been a favorite of mine, Don Julio really did a nice job on this selection, and price well i can get a bottle of this for $75.99 at my trusted Beverage Depot, and is well worth the price, compared to the Real, you get what you pay for, now of course the difference between the 1942 and Anejo are slim, but make for a totally different comparison. The nose contains a real rich aroma of caramel and toffee, compared to the anejos citrusy notes, once in your mouth you can sense the silky smooth characteristics of agave flavors fruits, and spicey undertones, with a rich smooth sweet finish if oak and and vanilla. Excellent tequila one of my favorites.

Honestly I feel it's a crime the average user rating for this tequila isn't in the 95-100 range. I suspect it's due to the fact that other (inexperienced) reviewers we're eval the price of this nectar below 90, thus driving the overall ave down. Here's the bottom line, for tequila of this quality you should be expecting to pay a much higher price. High quality, fair price. That's called value. I've had my fair share of extra anejo's and this stuff blows many of them out of the water...and remember, this is just a plain old anejo we're talking about here. Let me be specific. I can smell vanilla and butterscotch from about 10" from the glass. The taste and finish echo the scent. When this stuff goes in my mouth, I just let it sit there. Let my tongue marinate for a while. The finish just resinates that flavor. Maybe 10...maybe 15 seconds after it's down. At this price point, A+

Aroma of sweet straw a hint of butterscotch. Colour similar to a German Reisling or light pale gold. First taste was not full of alcohol (that comes moments later) but smooth agave flavour for sure. Hints of Vanilla & honey, very long alcohol finish (tingles the toungue for a time after it gone). I'm going to use this as a first in a Tequila tasting as its a good drink and should hook the non Tequila drinkers into trying another, the experienced drinkers will wonder what I can do to top this.

Don Julio Anejo NOM 1449 Tasted 12/5/2007:
Color golden khaki with lemon chiffon reflections. Legs fragmented with slow oily drop. Spotty finish with constant yet hesitant drops. Agave roots from the bottom rising to an increasingly subtle sweet vanilla top rim. Refreshingly light on first touch with honey oak start, slight pepper middle that fades in taste but not in warmth, through a thick and lasting sweet honey vanilla finish.
