Don Chendo Destilado de Agave Anejo

Don Chendo Anejo is produced at Rancho Verano, a small distillery just outside of Puerto Vallarta. The Don Chendo products are 100% Agave and produced similar to Tequila, but they use the Green Agave instead of the Blue Agave. By using a different species of Agave, they are only allowed to call their product "Destilado de Agave".

This is seriously the best tequila I have ever tasted. It is nothing like anything you can get state-side. It's made with pure blue agave, but because they make it in small batches and do not distribute internationally, they are not allowed to call it tequila, so they resort to "Liquor de Agave." It is hand-made in small batches at a small private distillery in Jalisco outside Puerto Vallarta. They offer five types: white, Reposado, Anejo, and two sweetened spirits, almondo and a coffee tequilla that also includes chocolate and vanilla flavors (unlike the much sweeter Kaluha). A couple of sites online say that this is made with green agave, but I asked one of Don Chendo's sons at the distillery, and he confirmed that that is incorrect. False information is often posted online by competing distilleries, in order to discredit other distilleries. With anticipated approval, they are hopeful that they will be able to ship bottles to the U.S. in 2013. There's more info. at tequilatourvallarta.com. Again, this is extremely fine tequila, in my opinion, second to none, and certainly much better than even the finest offerings by the likes of Jose Cuervo.

This is some of he smoothest tequila I've ever tasted. We stopped by the distillery and took the tour, which involved a lesson on how to judge tequila, and a taste of about five different kinds. It is well worth the trip. I only wish I could get it stateside.
